BetaATP Improves Strength, Lean Mass Gains in Athletes

MISSOULA, Mont.—New research on the interaction of Beta-Hydroxy-Beta Methylbutyrate Free Acid (HMB-FA) and Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) shows the product BetaATP™ could have significant implications in sports and strength training for elite athletes and those engaging in high-level conditioning. The University of Tampa study, led by renowned sports nutrition researcher Jacob Wilson, Ph.D., CSCS*D, was published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (JSCR), and it illustrates that the combination of HMB-FA and ATP found in BetaATP may produce significant results in the areas of lean body mass additions, power, and strength.

BetaATP, developed through a collaborative research partnership between raw material innovators Metabolic Technologies, Inc. (MTI) and TSI Group Ltd., is a combination of the products BetaTOR™ (HMB-FA) and PEAK ATP® (ATP).

Clinical proof of the value of both ATP and HMB-FA has long been accepted – ATP for its ability to aid performance under high fatiguing contractions and to allow greater recovery from fatigue, and HMB-FA for its ability to speed the regenerative capacity of skeletal muscle following intense, prolonged workouts.

The double-blind study, conducted at the university’s Human Performance and Sports Medicine Laboratory, investigated 12 weeks of HMB-FA (3g) and ATP (400mg) supplementation within a three-phase, placebo- and diet-controlled model.

Phases consisted of an 8-week periodized resistance-training program, followed by a 2-week overreaching cycle and a 2-week taper, which found that the combination of HMB-FA and ATP produced dramatic results, including lean body mass increases of 12.7 percent, post-training strength gains of 23.5 percent and an increase in vertical jump and Wingate power numbers of 21.5 and 23.7 percent, respectively.

Wilson called the study outcome “revolutionary," for its novel training protocols, and for the dramatic results produced by the supplement pairing of HMB-FA and ATP.

“What these two supplements do (when combined) is enhance your ability to train hard and recover faster so you can do it again," Wilson said. “This supplement combo works synergistically to help athletes push the boundaries of human performance and find their new limits."

Previous research shows PEAK ATP supplementation alone can also increase total body strength, power and muscle mass.
