WASHINGTONValley Meat Company, a Modesto, Calif., firm, is recalling approximately 1 million pounds of frozen ground beef patties and bulk fresh ground beef products that may be contaminated with a rare strain of E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced.

The recall involves ground beef products and soy patties that were distributed to foodservice and retail outlets in Arizona, California, Oregon and Texas, as well as internationally. These products were produced Oct. 2, 2009, through Jan. 12, 2010.

The recall was initiated after the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) notified FSIS that seven patients had been diagnosed with PFGE subtype E. coli O157:H7.
