AHPA's Dentali Leads USP Supplement Committee

SILVER SPRING, M.D.Steven Dentali, Ph.D., led his first meeting as chair of the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) Dietary Supplement Nomenclature Joint Subcommittee on September 18. Dentali, the chief science officer for the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), was appointed chair in August. Dentali also moderated a session of the USP Science and Standards Symposium on Functional Foods and Dietary Supplements.

"With the continued recent growth of USP standards in the food, supplements, and now herbal medicines categories, the need for accurate and consistent botanical and nonbotanical supplement ingredient nomenclature has never been clearer," Dentali said. "The work of the USP nomenclature subcommittee couldn't begin at a better time, and I'm gratified to see the subcommittee members and USP staff working together on issues that include considering a recommendation to include the plant part in the title of botanical monographs."
