Australia, NZ Warn Against DMAA Products

CANBERRA, AustraliaThe Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) encouraged consumers who have purchased products containing 1,3-dimethylamylamine (DMAA) to discard them in a consumer warning the agency released. FSANZ said DMAA has been linked to various adverse health effects including high blood pressure and vomiting.

 FSANZ Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Melanie Fisher, also noted a couple of consumers have submitted adverse health reports in Australia.

FSANZ said it is working with state and territory government agencies and departments to investigate a range of DMAA products following complaints from consumers. The New South Wales Food Authority tested 12 of these products, and 11 tested positive for DMAA, Fisher said. Those brands that tested positive are: Noxpump, 3-D explosion, Beta-Cret, PreSurge, 1 MR, Cyroshock,, Jack3D, Mesomorph, Neurocore, Oxyelite powder and Hemo Rage Black.

 Fisher added regulatory agencies are assessing the products safety and are seeking the assistance of retailers, importers and distributors on a withdrawal of the products.

The Federal Department of Health and Ageing is looking at whether DMAA should become a prohibited substance and has sought advice from the Advisory Committee on Medicines Scheduling, which is meeting later this month.

 In the United States, FDA recently sent warning letters to 10 DMAA marketers questioning the products legality and safety, and in December 2011, the Department of Defense halted the sales of DMAA products within military facilities.
