Cargill Recalls More Tainted Ground Turkey

WASHINGTONCargill Meat Solutions Corp. is recalling another 185,000 pounds of ground turkey products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Heidelberg, USDAs Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Sept. 11. Yesterdays recall follows on the heels of the Aug. 3 recall of 36 million pounds of tainted ground turkey products after they were linked to a multi-state Salmonella outbreak.
The recall involves fresh ground turkey distributed at the retail level nationwide and sold in chubs, trays and patties under the HEB, Kroger, Honeysuckle White brands.
The latest recall was issued after a test showed Salmonella in a sample from the same Arkansas plant tied to a recall issued last month. On July 29, 2011, FSIS released a public health alert about illnesses caused by Salmonella Heidelberg that may be associated with consumption of ground turkey. To date, 79 persons in 26 states have reportedly been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg between March 1 and Aug. 3, 2011. In addition, one death has been reported.
