Cargill Resumes Canadian Operations After Flood

HIGH RIVER, AlbertaCargill will resume operations at its High River beef packing plant, nearly four days after severe flooding blanketed communities in southwest Alberta. All of Cargill's departments will be up and running except the harvesting of beef, Cargill told Canadian Cattlemen.

The heavy rain fall, along with heavy snowcap runoff from the Rocky Mountains, caused the flooding that forced the communities to evacuate. Currently, those in eastern Alberta and Saskatchewan, running up to The Pas, are being prepared for the impact the flooding will make as it moves up the Saskatchewan River.

Verlyn Olson, Alberta's agriculture minister, posted a tweet on Friday that said that it is still "too early to assess the full extent of  (the floods') impact on farmland."

The Canadian Pacific Railway main line has reopened Monday and its south line to Lethbridge is to be fully restored by Thursday. The JBS beef plant at Brooks, Alberta, was operating normally on Monday.
