WASHINGTONBravo Farms Dutch Style Gouda cheese recently sold and sampled at Costco stores between Oct. 5 and Nov. 1 has been linked to an E. coli outbreak that has sickened 25 people in five states, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Nov. 4.

The cheese, which has been removed from Costco shelves, was available for sale, and free samples were offered for in-store tasting at Costco locations in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada. According to the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been nine reported hospitalizations and one possible case of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

The cheese is manufactured by Bravo Farms of Traver, Calif., and FDA and California state officials have begun an investigation.
