Chobani Issues Formal Recall of Greek Yogurt, Expands List

WASHINGTONChobani, Inc., of Twin Falls, Idaho, today formally announced a recall of its Greek-style yogurts due to packaging bloating and swelling and some claims of illness, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced. The recall comes just days after the yogurt maker asked retailers removed specific lots of its yogurt cups from store shelves after numerous consumer complaints about foul smelling and tasting yogurt, and bloated containers.

The company has ceased the distribution of the product due to reports of product bloating and swelling and some claims of illness as the company continues its investigation to identify the root cause. The potentially affected product was distributed nationwide from its Twin Falls, Idaho facility and was delivered to consumers through retail and club stores.

The recall involves the following yogurts bearing the product the code 16-012 with expiration dates from Sept. 11, 2013 to Oct. 7, 2013 (four-digit time stamp):

  • Chobani 6-ounceall flavors

  • Chobani 16- ounce tubsall flavors

  • Chobani 32- ounceall flavors

  • Chobani 3.5-ounce cupsall flavors

  • Chobani Bite 3.5- ounce cupsall flavors

  • Chobani Flip 5.3- ounce containersall flavors

  • Chobani Champions® cups 3.5- ounceall flavors

  • Chobani Champions® tubes 2.25- ounce, 8, 16 and 36 countall flavors

A statement from the company said, the quality of Chobani products and the trust of its consumers are the company's primary concern, and it sincerely apologizes to its consumers impacted by this issue. Chobani holds itself to the highest standards and is committed to fully transparent and decisive action to rectify any identified issues.
