Coconut Water Solids Goes GRAS
July 15, 2008
After review of safety and toxicology data by an independent panel of scientists assembled by Soni & Associates, Inc., a coconut water solids ingredient has been deemed self-affirmed GRAS in a variety of foods and beverages, such as nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages, frozen dairy, dairy product analogues, milk products, snack foods, imitation dairy products, chewing gum, instant tea and coffee, and soups.
The ingredient, marketed as Cococin by Sabinsa Corporation, is a standardized composition of freeze-dried coconut water solids obtained from tender, green (immature) coconut fruit that boosts a food’s levels of potassium and magnesium. In Southeast Asia, Central America and other tropical regions, green coconut water has long been valued for its regenerative benefits.
“Achieving GRAS notification within the target timeframe fulfills one more milestone in Sabinsa’s development program to better serve our partners in the food industry,” says Muhammed Majeed, Ph.D., founder and chairman, Sabinsa Corporation.
