Consumers Want Affordable Organic Foods

AUSTIN, TexasSticker shock at the grocery store isnt stopping U.S. shoppers from buying organic and/or natural foods, according to results of Whole Foods Markets annual Food Shopping Trends Tracker" survey that revealed 74% of adults surveyed said they wouldn't compromise on the quality of the food they buy.

The survey, conducted online in August by Harris Interactive, also revealed 72% of Americans said they will continue to buy the same amount of natural and/or organic foods as previously purchased, and 24% said natural and/or organic foods would make up more than 25% of their total household food purchases this year.

Eighty-two percent said current food prices have affected their grocery shopping, and more than 75% have changed their cooking and eating habits due to the economy, with 57% eating dinner at home and eat out less often.

The survey also found 70% of shoppers want to find ways to be able to buy natural and organic foods within their budget, and 71% said they would buy natural and/or organic foods over conventional foods if prices are comparable.

"This latest poll confirms consumers are still seeking out high-quality organic and natural products but are shopping in ways that help them to save money," said Walter Robb, co-CEO of Whole Foods Market.
