WASHINGTONThe Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) and the Natural Products Association (NPA) met with new members of Congress, including 83 offices in the House of Representatives and 14 offices in the Senate, and gave an informative discussion on dietary supplements.

The meeting focused on the importance of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) and how FDA needs enforcement tools to protect consumers in the supplement industry. In addition, the value of supplements for overall health and wellness, and healthcare cost savings were emphasized throughout the meeting.

We anticipate that the remainder of 2013 will bring several more regulatory and legislative challenges for the industry," said Liz Hurst, director of government relations at NPA. "Taking the time to sit down with each new member of Congress helps ensure that any legislation affecting the dietary supplement industry will be decided on by informed elected representatives."

CRN and NPA will continue to work with the Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus (DCS) to host various DSC briefings and other educational opportunities throughout the year.
