President-elect Barack Obama has plenty to do once he takes office. Some are hoping he’ll find time to repair the country’s patchwork food-safety system.
In a recent article, The New York Times begins: “For reasons that defy logic, the nation’s food safety functions are split.” Unfortunately, the budget isn’t, the article states, noting that USDA inspects only 20% of the nation’s food supply yet receives the majority of federal food safety dollars.
