Dried Fish Recalled Over Botulism Fear
December 8, 2010
WASHINGTONS&S Food Inc., a Brooklyn, N.Y., firm, is recalling dried fish Vobla gutted that was not properly eviscerated prior to processing. The product was sold nationwide and may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum spores that can cause botulism, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on Dec. 6.
The sale of uneviscerated fish is prohibited under New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated fish has been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning. The problem was discovered by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors during a routine inspection.
The recalled dried fish Vobla gutted is a product of Germany and comes in a coded, plastic vacuum-packed bag with a production code of 21.06.2010, lot # 280610140.
