DSMs geniVida Affirmed GRAS
July 15, 2010
PARSIPPANY, N.J. DSM Nutritional Products announced an independent panel of experts affirmed the companys geniVida® soy-free genistein as GRAS (generally recognized as safe). The ingredient can be incorporated into select food and beverage applications including beverages, dairy and confectionery for older women and men; geniVida was previously available in both crystalline and tablet-grade forms for dietary supplement and nutraceutical applications.
geniVida is manufactured using a special patented process; it is allergen-free and non-GMO. geniVida works in multiple food applications and can be used in menopausal and post menopausal formulations for hot flash relief and bone health. While mature women are the primary target audience, geniVida is also beneficial for bone and prostate health applications for mature men.
Studies supported by DSM have shown geniVida exerts powerful effects on bone health and in menopause. A trial conducted by KGK Synergize and first presented at the Experimental Biology 2009 meeting found 30 mg/d of geniVida reduced hot flashes in menopausal women by 44 percent after 12 weeks; there was also a 25-percent or greater reduction in the duration of daily hot flashes in women taking geniVida. Another trial, presented at the IOF World Congress on Osteoporosis in May 2010 reported an increase in bone mineral density up to 3.4 percent in post-menopausal women after six months of supplementation with geniVida Bone Blend (a combination of geniVida plus vitamin D3, vitamin K1 and long-chain omega-3 essential fatty acids).
Interested companies can learn more about the GRAS affirmation and geniVida safety and efficacy studies during the IFT Food Expo (DSM Booth #5037).
