WILMINGTON, Del.DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products Company LLC launched Zemea® USP Propanediol, a natural solvent and humectant that can replace petroleum-based propylene glycol or glycerin in a variety of food and beverage products.

Zemea® USP is a natural, 100-percent bio-based ingredient made from corn sugar through fermentation.  It is an environmentally sustainable alternative to petroleum-based glycols and glycerin, and the products humectancy, preservative effects, unique solubility and taste properties may be beneficial in food and beverage applications. Previous research funded by Tate & Lyle found specialty corn fibers may have positive health benefits to bone and gut health.

Zemea® attained all of the required regulatory approvals for use in the U.S. food industry. It received non-objection from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its self-affirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status, and is certified GRAS by the Flavor & Extracts Manufacturers Association (FEMA). In addition, the product is certified and tested according to the requirements of the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) and the United States Pharmacoepia (USP).  It is certified 100-percent bioibased by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and has both kosher and Halal certifications.
