E. coli Outbreak Prompts Hazelnut Recall

WASHINGTONLos Angeles-based DeFranco and Sons is recalling bulk and consumer-packaged in-shell, hazelnut and mixed nut products in the United States and Canada after health officials linked them to seven cases of E. coli in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The hazelnuts recalled were packaged in their shells by DeFranco & Sons and sold under the brand names Sunripe, George Packing, Firestone Farms and Northwest Hazelnut. They were distributed to retailers nationwide from Nov. 2, 2010 through Dec. 22, 2010, and may have been sold in 2-pound and 4-pound packages of mixed nuts, 1-pound packages containing only in-shell hazelnuts or in open bins of nuts in grocery stores.
