FDA Amends Starch Requirements

WASHINGTON--In response to a petition filed by the National Starch and Chemical Co., the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is amending the food additive regulations to allow food to be starch-modified by amylolytic enzymes (docket no. 99F-2082). These enzymes include beta-amylase,glucoamylase, isoamylase and pullulanase. In addition, food starch hydrolyzed by these methods does not have to have a dextrose equivalent of less than 20. This rule appeared in the Federal Register March 30 and was open for a 30-day comment period.
