FDA Warns Firms Selling Tanning Pills

WASHINGTONThe Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) issued warning letters to two firms selling canthaxanthincapsules with claims of protection from sunburn, genetic damage and skin cancer.The agency (www.fda.gov) sent a June 24 warning letter to Fargo, N.D.-basedAmerican Sports Nutrition and a June 29 letter to Yorba Linda, Calif.- based RPMTotal Vitality.

The warning letters also cited claims for enhanced tanning andcoloring of the skin, which the agency pointed out as a separate violation fromthe drug claims. The claims of enhanced tanning caused the product to be anadulterated cosmetic, according to the agency.
