Federal Excise Tax on Soda in the Works

WASHINGTONThe Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Center for Science in the Public Interest is planning to propose a federal excise tax on soda, certain fruit drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks and ready-to-drink teas. It would not include most diet beverages. While lawmakers have not put a number of the size of the tax, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that a 3-cent tax per 12-ounce serving would generate $24 billion over the next four years.
