Food Safety Alert: Kennys Farmhouse Cheese Recalled Over Listeria

WASHINGTONKennys Farmhouse Cheese is recalling Kentucky Rose, Kentucky Bleu, Awe-Brie and Tomme de Nena brands of cheese in seven states because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Oct. 2.

This is the second major cheese recall linked to Listeria in the past month. On Sept. 10, Forever Cheese recalled Frescolina brand ricotta salata cheese in 21 states and the District of Columbia because the cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has linked the recalled cheese to three deaths and 14 hospitalizations in the United States since September.

Kennys Farmhouse Cheese were sold to farmers markets, restaurants, distributors and retail stores in Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia between Aug. 22 and Sept. 25, 2012.

The recall involves Kentucky Rose bleu cheese packaged in 8-ounce wedges, 3.5- or 7-pound wedges or 15-pound wheels with Lot code #120531; Kentucky Bleu bleu cheese packaged in 8-ounce wheels or 1.5-pound wheels that are waxed and hand wrapped with Lot codes #120531 and #120612; Awe-Brie brie cheese packaged in 8-ounce wheels or 1.5-pound wheels that are hand wrapped with Lot codes #120614, #120629 and #120716; and Tomme de Nena tomme cheese packaged in 8-ounce wedges, 3.5- or 7-pound wedges or 14-pound wheels with Lot codes #120614 and #120716.
