Frutarom's Vitamin K2 Gains GRAS Status

LONDERZEEL, BelgiumFrutarom reported its natural vitamin K ingredient, UniK2, has been self-affirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe) for use as a food ingredient in products such as dairy products, soy milk, fruit drinks and sport drinks, as well as baked and bar products. The status was awarded after a review by a qualified, independent scientific panel.

A comprehensive evaluation of research and toxicology studies was completed to ensure that UniK2 meets the highest standards related to the self-affirmed GRAS determination, said Wouter Haazen, product manager for Frutarom Health, adding the GRAS status allows Frutarom to service functional food and beverage markets worldwide. We're extremely pleased that functional food and beverage manufacturers can now incorporate UniK2 into their products."

UniK2 is made from Bacillus subtilis from natto and is available as menaquinone-7 (MK-7), a highly bioactive and bioavailable formthe longer chain length provides it significantly longer shelf life in the blood, which contributes to its benefits outside of the liver, according tot he company. The ingredient is produced using ecological-friendly methods such as recycling 100 percent of the production waste, which then goes to produce other materials or to generate thermal energy.
