Garlic Gains Popularity
WASHINGTON--A report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows that an increased demand for garlic hasdeveloped over the past 10 years. Americans consumed 3.1 lbs. of garlic per person in 1999, three times as much as in 1989. The USDA proposes that an increased interest in ethnic cooking and dietary supplementscontaining garlic accounts for the growth. The price for garlic peaked at $47.90 per 100 lbs. in 1997, but prices are expected to drop because of 1999's high-yield crops. For more information, visitwww.usda.gov.
