LOS ANGELESHerbalife International has issued a voluntary recall of certain lots of its Nutritional Shake Mix due to concerns it may contain traces of milk proteins, which are an allergen to some people. The product is labeled as dairy free, but three lots of the shake mix may contain the milk allergen. While the company said no reports of illness or adverse events have been associated with this product, it was pulling the product because people with severe milk allergies could have a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume milk proteins.

The nutritional shake product was distributed exclusively by Herbalife's independent distributor network in the United States between January 16, 2013, and February 16, 2013 as cartons of 12 packets or as single-serving packets in the company's introductory business pack. Lot numbers 133405G10, 133408G10, and 133409G10 were included in the recall. Herbalife said it is actively contacting its network of independent distributors, and it has notified FDA of the issue.
