OSLO, NorwayKappa Bioscience's vitamin K2 menaquinone-7 ingredient, K2VITAL, received novel food approval. The Novel Food application was submitted to the German Food Safety Agency; based on the positive German assessment, the other European Union member states have acknowledged the novel food recommendation. As such, K2VITAL can now be used in food supplements, fortified foods and food products for specific nutritional purposes across the European markets.

"This is a major achievement for all users of vitamin K2," said Egil Greve, CEO of Kappa Bioscience. "Our products represent a technological breakthrough in the vitamin sector and provide the market with vitamin K2 of the highest possible purity and functionality for use in tablets, capsules and fortification of food products. This now allows food and [dietary supplement] manufacturers to take vitamin K2 from a previous niche application into mainstream application due to a better cost-in-use proposition."

The K2VITAL product range of all-trans menaquinone-7 is available in powder, granular and liquid forms, in various concentrations. It was also certified kosher by OK KOSHER in 2011. K2VITAL has been available in the United States and other selected markets since 2011. Kappa has a co-operative agreement with Xsto Solutions for sales in the U.S. dietary supplement market, and with DuPont, which acquired Danisco in May 2011, for the global food segment.
