Kemin Announces FloraGLO GRAS News

DES MOINES, IowaFloraGLOLutein earned expanded GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status for increasedinclusion amounts in its current categories, as well as for use in new foodcategories, according to Kemin Foods (www.keminfoods.com). The announcement wasmade at the IFT Food Expo in Chicago, held July 13 to 16.

The GRAS inclusion levels for FloraGLO in its originalcategories including tomato-based pasta sauce, snack crackers, canned soupsand ready-to-drink teas, among otherswere increased by a range of up to 200percent. Lutein inclusion allowances per serving now range from .3 mg to 3 mg,and the inclusion allowance limit for medical foods was increased to 20 mg/d.

These expanding GRAS levels demonstrate the safety andversatility of lutein in foods and beverages, said Cheryl Sturm, strategicmarketing manager at Kemin Foods. This is important in the continuing questto make the powerful health impact of FloraGLO Lutein widely available toconsumers everywhere.

The new food categories for which FloraGLO was approvedinclude bottled water, carbonated beverages, instant and regular hot cereals,chewing gum, salad dressings, frozen yogurt, hard candy, energy and sportsdrinks, vegetable drinks, chewy and nougat candy, fruit snacks, and infant andtoddler foods (not including formula). According to the company, these additionsmake Kemins FloraGLO allowed for use in more food categories than any otherlutein.
