MINNETONKA, Minn.KIP Biotech announced it has self affirmed the GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status of its water-soluble phytosterol. The company had an independent panel of scientists review the safety and toxicology data on the ingredient.

Achieving self-affirmed GRAS status for our water-soluble phytosterol assures our customers can safely use this unique, tasteless and colorless ingredient in a variety of beverages and soups," said Greg McParland, CEO of KIP Biotech. Our water-soluble technology allows for greater integration of plant sterols in food and beverages than existing sterol products. This enhanced availability offers the consumer the potential for a much broader array of products supported by the FDA approved health claim of sterol related dietary cholesterol reduction."

The GRAS affirmation covers a variety of applications, including supplement drinks, carbonated and non-carbonated beverages, enhanced waters, energy drinks, tea, coffee and soups. The water-soluble phytosterol does not affect taste, clarity or texture of the product.
