Kraft Found Salmonella in 2007
April 6, 2009
FRESNO, Calif.Kraft Foods said they found traces of salmonella in their trail mix in 2007, but could not determine where the tainted nuts came from until two weeks ago. Testing at Krafts facilities led to the nationwide pistachio recall last week. Tests from an Illinois Kraft plant found a batch of fruits and nuts was contaminated in December 2007. Then, in September 2008,, another positive sample appeared. Thousands of tests later, Kraft could pinpoint the tainted pistachios came from the California-based Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc.
Last week, Kraft recalled or destroyed all possible contaminated products and warned its suppliers and FDA about the salmonella. FDA then called for a nationwide recall. Currently, no illnesses have been reported related to the recall.
Setton, the second-largest pistachio processor in the nation, sells its nuts to Kraft and 35 other wholesalers across the country.
