Listeria prompts hard-boiled egg recall in 34 states

WASHINGTONMichael Foods, Inc., has recalled more than 1 million hard-boiled eggs because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Feb. 1.
The recall involves hard-cooked eggs in brine sold in 10- and 25-pound pails for institutional use that were produced at its Wakefield, Neb., facility. The eggs were labeled under the brand names Columbia Valley Farms, GFS, Glenview Farms, Papettis, Silverbrook and Wholesome Farms. The affected products have expiration dates ranging from Jan. 30, 2012 to March 10, 2012.
The recalled eggs were purchased by food distributors and manufacturers located in 34 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
The food distributors and manufacturers who purchased the eggs could have used them in products that were sold to retail outlets or used in foodservice settings. Consequently, the following companies have issued recalls of foods containing the eggs:
GH Foods SW, based in Houston, is recalling 7.5-ounce plastic containers of "Fresh Garden Highway Cobb Salad" with a "Sell By" date through Feb. 6, 2012, that bear the establishment number "P-44056" inside the USDA mark of inspection The products were distributed to retail establishments in Texas.
Cincinnati-based Greencore USA is recalling 5.6-ounce plastic containers of Thorntons Quick Café Chef Salad" with an Enjoy By" date through Feb. 4, 2012, that bear the establishment number P-38518" inside the USDA mark of inspection The products were distributed to retail establishments in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.
18th Street Deli, Inc., a Hamtramck, Mich., firm, is recalling 9.25-ounce packages of "18th Street Deli Julienne Salad," "18th Street Deli Julienne Salad Lite" and "Balanced Choice Julienne Salad Lite" that bear the establishment number "P-22061" inside the USDA mark of inspection and expiration dates of Jan. 27, 2012, and Jan. 30, 2012. The salad products were produced on Jan. 20 and distributed to retail stores in Michigan and vending companies in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
