Listeria prompts hard-boiled egg recall in 34 states

WASHINGTONMichael Foods, Inc., has recalled more than 1 million hard-boiled eggs because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Feb. 1.

The recall involves hard-cooked eggs in brine sold in 10- and 25-pound pails for institutional use that were produced at its Wakefield, Neb., facility. The eggs were labeled under the brand names Columbia Valley Farms, GFS, Glenview Farms, Papettis, Silverbrook and Wholesome Farms. The affected products have expiration dates ranging from Jan. 30, 2012 to March 10, 2012.

The recalled eggs were purchased by food distributors and manufacturers located in 34 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

The food distributors and manufacturers who purchased the eggs could have used them in products that were sold to retail outlets or used in foodservice settings. Consequently, the following companies have issued recalls of foods containing the eggs:
