DERRY, N.H. MegaFood received the Non-GMO Project verified seal for five of its whole food supplement products, assuring the products use consensus-based best practices for genetically modified organism (GMO) avoidance.

Blood Builder, Wild Blueberry, Magnesium, Calcium, and Calcium Magnesium and Potassium supplement products by Megafood received the certification. Additionally, the Non-GMO Project recognized the FoodState manufacturing facility, which produces MegaFood nutrients, as a certified handler of non-GMO materials and products.

Several of our MegaFood products have been submitted for the Non-GMO Project Verified seal, but the process is long and more complicated for whole food supplements," said Robert Craven, CEO of FoodState, makers of MegaFood.  While our entire product line has been non-GMO for more than five years, we are pleased to have these first five products certified by the Non-GMO Project and anticipate several more products will receive the same verification by the first half of next year."

In 2008, the Non-GMO Project third-party verification program was launched as an initiative of independent natural foods retailers who were interested in providing customers with more information regarding the GMO risk of their products.

GMO labeling bills were recently introduced in Congress. If passed, the legislation would require labeling of GMO foods.

Craven recently initiated The Non-GMO Working Group, which includes a group of dietary supplement manufacturers who have united to support the Non-GMO Project. Member also aim to identify and support non-GMO ingredient manufacturers and suppliers.

The Non-GMO Project has rigorous, high standards for obtaining their seal and much of the supplement ingredient supply chain is not ready to support the cause," Craven said.  My hope is that by creating The Non-GMO Working Group, we can create a more phased approach that allows our ingredient suppliers to catch up with the movement."

In 2012, MegaFood's testing and research facility also received certification for its quality management practices.
