Mexico Snubs Foster Farms Chicken

LIVINGSTON, Calif.Mexico doesn't want Foster Farms' Salmonella-contaminated chicken.

According to news reports, America's southern neighbor has blocked imports of poultry from three Foster Farms facilities in California.

This is the first time Mexico has delisted a facility based on a public health alert by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), The Oregonian reported, citing USDA officials.

The impacted facilities are in Fresno and Livingston, Calif. Other Foster Farm plants on the West Coast were not delisted, the newspaper said.

Mexico's move represents the latest blow to Foster Farms, whose chicken has been linked to 338 illnesses in 20 states and Puerto Rico, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Foster Farms president Ron Foster told The Los Angeles Times the outbreak has led to a 25% reduction in sales.

The outbreak has renewed the debate over regulation of Salmonella.
