Milk Contaminated With Detergent Recalled in China

SHANGHAIChinas attempt at fixing its broken food-safety program took another hit this week after Bright Dairy & Food Co. announced a recall of its Ubest brand of milk because after tests revealed it was contaminated with detergent, the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision announced.

According to the bureau, Bright Dairy will deal with consumer complaints and handle food-safety issues, adding that the case is under further investigation.

The recall comes just weeks after China released a 5-year plan to upgrade its food-safety regulations as part of the country's latest efforts to address critical food-safety concerns. The announcement came at the conclusion of Chinas Food Safety Week, which also saw another scandal hit the dairy industry. Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group, one of China's largest dairy product manufacturers, recalled infant formula because of excessive levels of mercury.

In 2008, China was rocked by a tainted milk scandal that killed at least six children and made thousands ill. Three people were sentenced to death by the Shijiazhuang Intermediate Peoples Court in 2009 for their role in the scandal.
