Astaxanthin has been affirmed GRAS for use in functional food and beverage applications.

Companies whose astaxanthin brands are now affirmed GRAS for use in functional foods and beverages include: Cyanotech Corporation's BioAstin® Natural Astaxanthin, and AlgaTechnologies' AstaPure.

GRAS status for BioAstin comes at an opportune time as we have completed extensive research that has led to increased yields and production capacity," said Gerald R. Cysewski, Ph.D., Cyanotechs Founder and Chief Scientific Officer. Our increased capacity puts Cyanotech in a unique position as the industrys most consistent and long-term supplier of natural astaxanthin."

"Our AstaPure® brand has been successfully applied for several years as an active ingredient in dietary supplements, foods and beverages in Japan, says Efrat Kat, Director, Marketing & Sales at Algatechnologies. Achieving GRAS status and meeting the highest regulatory requirements in the U.S. is a major accomplishment, designed to support our customers in their food and beverage innovations utilizing the recognized health benefits of astaxanthin.
