Natural Eggshell Membrane Self-Affirmed GRAS

CARTHAGE, Mo.ESM Technologies announced self-affirmed GRAS status for its NEM® (Natural Eggshell Membrane) ingredient. The company says viable applications for natural eggshell membrane include beverages, juices, baked goods, soft candy and snack foods.  The Allowable Daily Intake (ADI) for NEM® is up to 14 grams per day for food use and intake. 

A study published in Clinical Rheumatology tested the effects of a 500 mg daily dose of the NEM on pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis of the knee. After 10 days, 33% of subjects experienced greater than a 30% reduction in pain, and 25% of subjects experienced greater than a 50% improvement in stiffness.

After 60 days, 32% of the supplement group experienced more than a 50% reduction in pain while stiffness continued to improve, registering an average 27% reduction compared to placebo.
