NFPA Takes Zero Tolerance Stance on Biotech Contamination
WASHINGTON--The National Food ProcessorsAssociation (NFPA) announced a zero tolerance position regarding adulteration ofthe food supply by plant-made pharmaceuticals. Along these lines, NFPAestablished a task force to work with government, the biotechnology industry andgrowers to ensure prevention measures and procedures, as well as regulatoryprotection and oversight. The task force's responsibility will be to assemble afull spectrum of food chain stakeholders with experience in science andagriculture to assess measures for protection against contamination andadulteration.
"The position taken by the NFPA board of directors makesclear that our top priority remains the production of a safe, wholesome andunadulterated food supply," said John R. Cady, president and chiefexecutive officer of NFPA. "We will not be satisfied with anything short ofzero risk to the food supply by substances not approved for human consumption. We live under a zero tolerance so the presence of any amount of these compoundsin our food products, no matter how small, will result in their beingadulterated."
