No FDA Questions for Xangold GRAS Status

LA GRANGE, Ill.--Cognis Nutrition & Healthannounced the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported "noquestions" in regard to the company's application for GRAS (generallyrecognized as safe) status for its Xangold brand natural lutein esters. Afterself-affirming Xangold as GRAS in 2002 in consultation with a panel ofindependent experts, Cognis submitted a voluntary notification to FDA. Cognisoffers Xangold for use in several applications, including baked goods and bakingmixes, beverages, frozen dairy desserts and mixes, breakfast cereals, dairyproducts and spreads.

"We are gratified that the FDA had no objection to our GRASdetermination for Xangold, paving the way for its use in specified foods,"said David Eckert, business director, North America. "This added safetyassurance is a benefit we are pleased to offer our customers in the functionalfoods and dietary supplements markets as they develop new products for luteinesters."
