WASHINGTONThe Natural Products Association (NPA) applauded the Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus, which was officially relaunched for the 112th Congress. The caucus serves as an informal, bipartisan group of members to facilitate discussions among lawmakers about the benefits of dietary supplements, provides tips and insights for better health and wellness, and promotes research into the health care savings provided by dietary supplements.

The Natural Products Association is delighted the new caucus is bicameral in addition to being bipartisan," said John Gay, NPA executive director and CEO. This demonstrates recognition of the growing importance of dietary supplements on Capitol Hill. The NPA looks forward to continuing to work with the caucus, along with the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), on the briefing series for Congressional staff about dietary supplement issues."

In addition, the Caucus will bring Congressional attention to the role of supplements in health promotion and disease prevention and address the regulation of the supplement industry. NPA commended Senators Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), and Representatives Dan Burton (R-Ind.), Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), Jared Polis (D-Colo.), and Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), for serving as co-chairs of the caucus.

NPAs mission is to advocate for the rights of consumers to have access to products that will maintain and improve their health, including dietary supplements, and the rights of retailers and manufacturers to provide those products. As part of its advocacy, NPA hosts Natural Products Day each year in Washington for NPA members and others in the industry to meet with members of Congress. This years event will be held on April 6.
