WASHINGTONThe Natural Products Association (NPA) expects the pending FDA new dietary ingredients (NDI) guidance offer clarity to dietary supplement manufacturers and consumers on the FDAs expectations regarding the marketing of new dietary ingredients, according to a statement released by Cara Welch, Ph.D., NPA vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs.

She said the NPA thanks Senators Orrin Hatch and Tom Harkin, who sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg expressing their support for the upcoming NDI guidance and reminding FDA that Congress will be watching how this affects industry and consumers.

We too welcome this guidance," she said. The guidance, scheduled to be released by July 5, will help the industry ensure that it continues to provide products made from ingredients on the market prior to the passage of DSHEA, she said. This was and remains Congresss clear intent," she noted.

On July 8, NPA will host a webinar conference call, NDI Guidance: What You Need to Know," with speakers including the director of the FDAs Division of Dietary Supplement Programs; the head of the global life sciences team at Sidley Austin LLP, who was also a major contributor to the drafting of DSHEA; and an NPA expert who specializes in regulatory, safety, nutrition and health issues.
