ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Good news for companies wishing to tap into the growing market for natural and organic personal care products by offering consumers certified organic options: NSF International announced “NSF/ANSI 305: Made with Organic Personal Care Products” was adopted as an American National Standard. The consensus-based standard allows “made with organic” claims in labeling and marketing for personal care and cosmetic products with organic content of 70 percent or more. This new standard establishes materials, processes, production criteria and conditions specifically for made with organic personal care products.

“We are very pleased to announce that NSF/ANSI 305 is now an American National Standard,” said Jane Wilson, NSF standards director. “This ‘made with organic' ingredients standard reflects the dedicated efforts of the stakeholders’ work and provides the foundation for consistent national voluntary requirements for ‘made with organic’ personal care products.”

Additionally, QAI, a San Diego-based organic certifier acquired by NSF in 2004, will immediately begin providing NSF/ANSI 305 certification services to companies wishing to make organic labeling and marketing claims for personal care products.
