DINUBA, Calif.Odwalla, Inc., is voluntarily recalling Odwalla Chocolate Protein Monster beverages after four consumers who are allergic to peanuts and/or tree nuts reported severe allergic reactions after consuming the beverages.

The nationwide recall involves 12-ounce and 32-ounce bottles of Odwalla Chocolate Protein Monster with "enjoy by" dates prior to and including May 23, 2012. The recall also involves Odwalla Protein Monster variety packs that are sold exclusively at Costco. The variety pack includes 10 12-ounce bottles, four of which are Odwalla Chocolate Protein Monster drinks. The affected products were distributed nationwide through retail food stores and foodservice establishments during the last seven weeks.

According to the company, the beverages do not contain no peanut or tree nut ingredients, and the production facility where it is produced does not make any peanut-containing products. The consumers who suffered allergic reactions are not known to be allergic to soy and milk but report being allergic to peanuts and/or tree nuts. The company is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate the cause of the allergic reactions.
