NEW YORKThe Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) released the second edition of its Encyclopedia of Dietary Supplements. Available through Informa Healthcare Books, the new release presents peer-reviewed entries examining scientific research on major vitamins and minerals, single herbs and botanicals, phytochemicals and other preparations. The Encyclopedia was edited by leaders of ODS and NIH, including Paul M. Coates, Ph.D., director of ODS.

The Encyclopedia is designed as a scientific resource about dietary supplements for health care professionals, researchers, industry members and consumers. New chapters and updated entries integrate different types of scientific data in a comprehensive form. Among the botanicals covered in the new edition are Aloe vera, bilberry, bitter orange, black cohosh, kava and saw palmetto. The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) noted its chief science officer, Steven Dentali, Ph.D., and chief operations officer, Devon Powell, co-authored the Aloe vera chapter. AHPA is proud to have contributed to this project, Dentali said. Having clear and consistent information on botanicals in an authoritative publication such as this will greatly benefit the industry.

AHPA members can take advantage of a 15 percent discount on the title, by downloading an order form online.
