Panel Finds Tagatose GRAS

BELTSVILLE, Md.--Arla Foods of Denmark and Spherix (Biospherics Inc.) jointly announced that tagatose, a low-calorie sweetener, has been generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), therefore permitting its sale in the United States. "Our extensive marketing efforts show an attractive market for tagatose," said Peter Lauritzen, managing director of Arla Foods. "GRAS is an important milestone that will enable us to engage customers in a closer dialogue," added Henrik Andersen, executive director for the company.

Tagatose is a naturally occurring sweetener derived from lactose. It is suitable for use in both food and functional food applications such as health bars, confections, cereal and diet soft drinks. The sweetener is safe for use by individuals with diabetes. For more information, visitwww.spherixinc.com.
