CHICAGOPureCircle announced plans to commercialize its latest stevia innovation, PureCircles high-purity Reb D. Following a detailed safety evaluation by an independent expert panel, PureCircles high-purity Reb D has received self-affirmed GRAS status, and the company has elected to formally submit its GRAS notification to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the agencys additional safety review.

PureCircle research has identified high purity Reb D as having one of the best sweetness profiles of any steviol glycoside from the stevia leaf, allowing formulators to develop naturally sweetened formulations with very low to no calories, particularly in food and beverages with higher sweetness levels, such as carbonated soft drinks. Its commercialization will play an integral role in extending the companys breakthrough Stevia 3.0 innovation platform alongside other next generation innovations, such as PureCircle Alpha, SG95 and PureCircle flavor NSF-02.

PureCircle Reb D commercialization follows more than a decade of research and development that takes advantage of breakthroughs across the companys entire vertically integrated supply chain. The company is currently collaborating with multiple companies to introduce the product to the United States.

On Nov. 30, the company received final approval from Health Canada authorizing the companys stevia for use in foods and beverages in Canada. Previously, the natural sweetener was only available as a Natural Health Product, and was not an approved food additive. The Nov. 30 approval was a result of research proving the safety and efficacy of steviol glycosides as a sweetener. In Canada, steviol glycosides can be used in a wide range of categories, including beverages, breakfast cereals, bakery products, desserts, fruit and nut spreads, confectionery, and table-top sweeteners.
