Salmonella-tainted tomato recall widens

WASHINGTON

Taylor Farms Pacific Inc., a Tracy, Calif., firm, has expanded its May 3 nationwide recall of grape tomatoes because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today.

The tomatoes were grown by Six L's of Immokalee, Fla., and used in a variety of prepared and packaged salads made by Taylor Farms Pacific for Albertsons, Raley's, Safeway, Savemart, Sam's Club and Walmart. The recalled products were sold at the stores deli and meat counters and have sell-by dates between April 27 and May 9. They were distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, California, Georgia and Canada, and reached consumers through retail stores and restaurant distribution.

On May 4, Safeway expanded its voluntary recall to include fresh kabobs made with grape tomatoes supplied by Taylor Farms and sourced from grower Six L's sold in its full-service meat counter in several states. The recalled kabobs were sold between April 26, 2011, and May 3, 2011 and have a sell by date up to and including May 3, 2011. The kabobs were sold in Safeway, Vons, Pavilions and Pak N Save stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota and southwest Washington State.
