Salmonella Triggers Nationwide Dog Treats Recall

WASHINGTONDenver-based Kasel Associated Industries announced a nationwide recall of all dog treats manufactured at its Denver facility between April 20 and Sept. 19, 2012, because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced. The company has issued three previous recall notices for specific products manufactured during this time period.

The recalled products include Boots & Barkley, BIXBI, Natures Deli, Colorado Naturals, Petco, and Best Bully Stick items sold nationwide by various retailers, including Target, Petco, Sams Club and Costco. Most of the products have a 2-year shelf life.

The latest recall comes after the Colorado Department of Agriculture tested a retail sample of a Kasel pet treat product and found it to be positive for Salmonella. Based on FDAs follow-up inspection at the firm, FDA found that all of the finished pet treat product samples and 48 out of 87 environmental samples collected during the inspection tested positive for Salmonella.  More than ten different species of Salmonella were found in the firms products and manufacturing facility, indicating multiple sources of contamination.

In 2012, Salmonella-tainted dry dog food was the source of a multistate outbreak that sickened 14 people in nine states with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Infantis. Five people, including an infant, were hospitalized.
