WASHINGTON, DCThe USDA/FSIS announced a further recall of potentially Salmonella-contaminated salami manufactured by Daniele International Inc., Pascoag and Mapleville, R.I., today. It expanded the Jan. 23, 2010 recall to include approximately 115,000 pounds of salami/salame products sold under the Daniele, Dietz & Watson and Boars Head labels. The have sell-by dates from Feb. 3, 2010 through May 26, 2010, and were distributed to retail nationwide.

The expanded recall results from a confirmed finding of Salmonella in an unopened salami product tested by FSIS, and by ingredient testing performed by the company during the course of the ongoing investigation of the multi-state outbreak of Salmonella serotype Montevideo illnesses. Based on preliminary tests, the company believes crushed red pepper might be a possible source of the Salmonella.

FSIS is continuing to work with the CDC, FDA, state public health offices, and the company on the investigation and will update the public on the progress as information becomes available.
