WASHINGTONFLEXNEWS is reporting that Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack favors the idea of creating one food-safety agency to oversee the food-safety work currently handled by a number of agencies.
USDA Spokesman Jim Brownlee said the need for a modernized food-safety system ultimately under the control of a single agency is illustrated, in Vilsack's view, by the ongoing recall of more than 1,000 food products to prevent the spread of Salmonella.
