Yellowfin Tuna Recalled Over Salmonella Bareilly Outbreak

WASHINGTONThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of 58,828 pounds of a frozen raw yellowfin tuna product that is the possible source of a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Bareilly that has sickened 116 people in 20 states and the District of Columbia. The agency noted 12 people have been hospitalized with the rare strain of bacteria.

FDA said Moon Marine USA Corp. (also known as MMI) of Cupertino, Calif., issued a recall of frozen raw yellowfin tuna product, labeled as Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA sold through distributors to restaurants and grocery stores that make sushi, sushi, sashimi, ceviche or similar dishes. The product is not available for sale to individual consumers. Many of the people who became ill reported eating raw tuna in sushi as spicy tuna."

The company name and Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA were printed on boxes of the product when it was initially sold to distributors; however, the boxes may have been broken into smaller lots for further sale and may not be available to the end retailer or consumer. Distributors and end users have been instructed to consult their suppliers to determine the origin of any Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA in their possession.

Illnesses have been reported in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.
