In recent industry news, AstaReal separated from NAXA, Mondi and Fruit d’Or released new products, and Nature’s Power Nutraceuticals and Lesaffre Human Care announced Vitafoods Europe highlights.

AstaReal announced its amicable withdrawal from the Natural Algae Astaxanthin Association (NAXA), of which AstaReal was a founding member. NAXA was established in January 2014 for the purpose of educating consumers and industry about the important differences between natural astaxanthin sourced from algae and the synthetic form that is produced from petrochemicals. “AstaReal will continue to independently educate consumers that only natural astaxanthin from H. pluvialis should be used in supplements and functional foods and beverages,” said Kazuyuki Miyakawa, chief scientific advisor at AstaReal.

Asiros and Breko have agreed to work together for the sales and marketing of MitoActive and BerryShield products. In addition to Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Breko will also offer the products for customers in select Asian countries.

The American Botanical Council (ABC) announced a new feature on its website—Herbal MediaWatch, a continually updated compilation of headlines from media stories relevant to virtually all fields of herbal medicine represented in ABC’s member base.

Nature’s Power Nutraceuticals (NP Nutra®) is attending Vitafoods Europe for the second consecutive year in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 11 to May 13. The company will showcase six new products which are: Blueberry Juice Powder (organic), Carrot Juice Powder (organic), Cranberry Juice Powder, Lemon Juice Powder (organic), Spinach Powder (organic) and Stevia P.E. 90 percent (organic).

Also showcasing at Vitafoods Europe, Lesaffre Human Care will be rolling out its newest proprietary bacterium: LifeinUTM Bacillus subtilis CU1, a stable probiotic for immune support with clinically proven efficacy.

Nutrition 21 LLC announced that Joe Weiss joined the company as president. Weiss’ top priorities will be to accelerate the company's growth with product innovation, science and branding.

Mondi in North America introduced a new, customizable teapot-shaped SUP (Stand Up Pouch), designed to capture shoppers’ attention on consumer goods retail shelves. The pouch can be printed via flexographic or rotogravure print processes, and enhanced with metallic inks and matte finishes. It is available in sizes ranging from 350 to 1,000 mL and is compatible with conventional filling equipment for filling at the pouch’s top, or through its spout.

Fruit d’Or attended Ingredient Marketplace in Orlando and handed out 1,000 of its newest product—a nutritious twist on an old favorite: the first-ever organic chocolate peanut butter cup. Each cup contains 1.5 g of cranberry protein powder and 2 billion colony forming units (CFUs) of probiotics known as Lacto Cran. The cranberry powder contains carbon and nitrogen, which feed the Bacillus coagulans to give it fuel and provide its energy source. The cranberry provides 40 to 50 percent fiber and 20 to 25 percent protein. The combination of fiber and protein creates a tailor-made synbiotic (a combination of prebiotics and probiotics).
