SPRINGFIELD, Mass.

Butterball announced a national shortage of large, fresh turkeys 16 pounds or larger this Thanksgiving, according to a statement released by retailer Big Y World Class Markets on Nov. 13.

"Big Y's buyers placed orders for this year's supply of turkeys last June as is typical for this item. Today, they were notified by Butterball that their orders along with those of all other retailers across the country had been cut by 50%," the company said in the statement.

The shortage only applies to Butterball turkeys, and does not include Butterball frozen turkeys or smaller-weight fresh Butterballs.
