PARSIPPANY, N.J.—DSM won the 2014 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award in the Healthy and Sustainable Business category.

DSM and others were honored for their achievements in improving and protecting the environment in New Jersey and promoting sustainable business practices. The company was recognized for its ongoing activities to make its DSM Nutritional Product’s production plant in Warren County, New Jersey, one of the most environmentally friendly facilities in the state and an example of sustainable business practices.

Efforts at the DSM plant in Belvidere and White Township, New Jersey, include: the installation of a state of the art 10 MW cogeneration plant which reduce yearly plant emissions of NOx and CO by 48 tons and 11 tons, respectively; construction of a six MW solar field to supply clean and renewable energy to the site; the 100-percent composting of more than 6,000 annual tons of wastewater treatment biosolids; and continuing work to reduce site water consumption by exploring the feasibility to use 500,000 gallons a day of treated effluent to meet the site’s cooling tower needs. Additionally, the DSM site reached a 92-percent recycling/reuse rate with its biosolids and more than 900 tons of other recyclables, and it has partnered with the US Department of Energy in its Save Energy Now Leader initiative to reduce energy use.

DSM and its Warren County facility also run a number of other programs and initiatives designed to reduce the site’s environmental impact, reduce the carbon footprint of products produced there, and to encourage employees to embrace environmental sustainability at work, home and in the community.

The Governor's Environmental Excellence Award (GEEA) is the state of New Jersey’s premier environmental awards program recognizing outstanding environmental performance, programs and projects in the state. These awards honor and recognize individuals, businesses, educators, institutions, communities, youth and others who have made significant contributions to environmental protection in New Jersey.

Last year, the company won the first "Nutrition Innovation Gold Award" issued by the Chinese Nutrition Society (CNS) for its contribution to nutritional science.
